Age Equality and Human Rights

Older people face discrimination simply because of their age. Discrimination can take many forms and may effect many areas of your life.

 Two Older Men

Age discrimination is the most commonly reported form of prejudice: 23% of adults experience it each year.

Almost 900,000 people over 50 want a job. If they all found work, it would add around £30 billion annually to the UK economy.

People aged 75 and over are nearly ten times more likely to be refused a quote for motor or travel insurance than people aged 30 to 49.

Age Concern is calling on the Government to:

·         Ensure the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights prioritises the tackling of discrimination and human rights abuses suffered by older people and promotes age equality.

·         Outlaw mandatory retirement ages so that individual employees have the choice about when they retire

·         Introduce legislation covering age discrimination in goods, facilities and services (form health to insurance).
