Research: Mutual Caring Project

The Aim of the research was to investigate the information and support needs of people with learning difficulties in a Mutual Caring role.

 

  

Mutual Caring is a term to describe a situation where someone being cared for in turn cares for their carer. In the case of this study we were looking at how people with learning difficulties look after their older family carer which could be their Mother, father or other relative.

 

 

Main Recommendations: 

 

• To create procedures and criteria to ensure that people with learning difficulties in a Mutual Caring role have access to a Carers Assessment to ensure they receive the support needed to continue providing care.
• To make sure that the information and support needs of people with learning difficulties in a Mutual Caring role, as described in this report, are considered when developing the Older Families Support Service.
• To include the details of people with learning difficulties in a Mutual Caring role on a central database.
• All information and support materials for carers to be provided in a format that is accessible to people with learning difficulties.
